2022 Drop Rams

Pooginook annually produces 3,500 rams. Data is collected on all the progeny to provide accurate ASBVs. 50K DNA testing has been used to provide accurate parentage and genomics.

The ASBV's currently displayed on this page are the 2022 drop rams. From this group 350 auction rams, 1,000 grade rams and 70 keeper sires will be selected.

Generated by Sheep Genetics, Pooginook has a 94 Data Quality Score (DQS). It provides transparency for ram buyers about the quality of data used to calculate ASBVs. This five-star rating means that the Pooginook flock is in the top 2.8% of the MerinoSelect analysis for data quality.

2022 Drop Ram ASBVS

Growth Traits
  • POST WEANING WEIGHT (PWT)

Post Weaning Weight (kg) - Rams with a more positive PWT ASBV produce progeny that grow quicker and are heavier at 200 days of age (7-10 months).

  • YEARLING WEIGHT (YWT)

Yearling Weight (kg) - Rams with a more positive YWT ASBV produce progeny that grow quicker and are heavier at 300 days of age (10-13 months).

  • ADULT WEIGHT (AWT)

Adult Weight (kg) - Rams with a more positive AWT ASBV produce progeny that grow quicker and are heavier as an adult (>18 months).

    Wool Traits
    • YEARLING CLEAN FLEECE WEIGHT (YCFW)

Yearling Clean Fleece Weight (%) - Rams with higher YCFW ASBVs produce progeny which will cut more wool as a yearling (10-13 months).

    • ADULT CLEAN FLEECE WEIGHT (ACFW)

Adult Clean Fleece Weight (%) - Rams with higher ACFW ASBVs produce progeny which will cut more wool as an adult (>18 months).

    • YEARLING FIBRE DIAMETER (YFD)

Yearling Fibre Diameter (µm) - Rams with more negative YFD ASBVs produce progeny which are finer as a yearling (10-13 months).

    • YEARLING STAPLE LENGTH (YSL)

Yearling Staple Length (mm) - Rams with more positive YSL ASBVs will produce progeny with longer fibre length at 300 days of age (10-13 months).

      Breech Traits
      • EARLY BREECH WRINKLE (EBWR)

Early Breech Wrinkle (Score) - Rams with a lower breech wrinkle will produce progeny that have a lower degree of wrinkle in the breech area. Pooginook collects this raw data at lamb marking and importantly again at 12 months of age. Additionally, we are using 50k DNA genomics testing to improve the EBWR ASBV accuracy.

        Carcass Traits
        • YEARLING FAT (YFAT)

Fat Depth (mm) - Rams with more negative FAT ASBVs produce progeny that are leaner. FAT ASBVs estimate the genetic difference between animals in GR fat depth.

        • YEARLING EYE MUSCLE DEPTH (YEMD)

Eye Muscle Depth (mm) - Rams with more positive ASBVs for YEMD will produce progeny that have more muscle, independent of weight, and a higher lean meat yield. YEMD ASBVs estimate the genetic difference between animals in eye muscle depth at the C site.

          Reproduction Traits
          • CONCEPTION (CON)

Did the ewe conceive? Describes the genetic difference between animals for conception as adults.

          • LITTER SIZE (LS)

How many lambs were born? Rams with higher LS will produce daughters that give birth to more lambs.

          • EWE REARING ABILITIY (ERA)

How successfully did the ewe rear her litter? Rams with higher ERA will produce daughters which rear more of their litter.

          • WEANING RATE (WR)

Rams with more positive WR ASBVs will sire daughters that wean more lambs per ewes joined.
