Carcass

Breeding Objectives

Pooginook aims to minimise increasing adult body weight by balancing carcass traits with fast early growth. We aim to breed animals that are easier care, lower maintenance and finish quickly. Yearling fat and eye muscle are the key traits we are improving to achieve this.

POOGINOOK PRODUCTION

Currently our sheep can be finished and joined by 8-12 months. With strategic management Pooginook breeders have good doing ability in our dry environment and are able to achieve high production.

COMMERCIAL BENEFITS

  • Improved lamb finishing ability
  • Optimal maturity pattern and carrying capacity
  • Lower ewe maintenance

    CARCASS TRAITS
    • YEARLING EYE MUSCLE (YEMD)

Yearling Eye Muscle Depth (mm) - Ewes with more positive ASBVs for YEMD will produce progeny that have more muscle, independent of weight, and a higher lean meat yield. YEMD ASBVs estimate the genetic difference between animals in eye muscle depth at the C site.

      OUR BREEDING OBJECTIVE
Eye muscle is a key carcass trait we select for in combination with fast early growth. Improving this trait leads to increased lean meat yield and higher dressing percentage. Eating quality and growth rate need to be balanced with YEMD as these can be antagonistic.

    • YEARLING FAT (YFAT)

Yearling Fat Depth (mm) - Ewes with more negative YFAT ASBVs produce progeny that are leaner. YFAT ASBVs estimate the genetic difference between animals in GR fat depth as a yearling (10-13 months).

      OUR BREEDING OBJECTIVE
Fat increases the doing ability and is a key trait to help balance the ewe maintenance requirement. With strategic managemen Pooginook breeders are efficient in our dry environment. We are aiming to improve this trait with careful selection to avoid loss of main profit drivers such as fleece value. We believe this balance is important as production drives profit, provided maintenance costs are optimised. Improving fat can also improve intramuscular fat and eating quality.
