From 2016 - 2020 we have invested over $750,000 in DNA genomics. This makes Pooginook one of the largest collectors of sheep DNA genomics in Australia.

Using a TSU at marking, we take a DNA  sample from lambs. A 50k test from this sample provides full parentage, poll-horn status and predicts genomic breeding values for a number of traits. This test increases the accuracy of ASBVs -  particularly those traits measured later in life or traits harder to measure (intramuscular fat or shear force).

The DNA test provides us with accurate information much earlier in life, facilitating the selection of ram and ewe lambs for use within the stud at 7 - 8 months of age. This helps to fast track genetic progress. 

Our classing box is a modified 5-way proway auto drafter. We can weigh, class and auto-draft 5-ways. This system enables us to easily assess each individual sheep, analyse the data and make a grading decision. Any visual faults are visible and recorded against individual sheep.

The ALLFLEX wand is small and mobile, making it ideal work in the wool shed. The ALLFELX wand sends the EID tag number to the ZEBRA bar code printer. A printed barcode is placed on the fleece and scanned when fleece is weighed in the Fleece Weigh Box. The fleece weight is recorded against the animal's EID tag number.

We mainly use the Combi Clamp handler for things such as taking samples for micron, staple length and yield. A set of scales are also a part of the setup. This is mobile and can be set up on a trailor for use across multplie locations on the farm.

This is a game changer for undertaking procedures such as drenching, injecting, mouthing etc. It's fast, easy and low stress on the animal and operator.
